SIGNIFICANCE :
Of Bali:
It gives contentment to the deceased, and promotes comfort and happiness for successors. The ceremony is meant to remember the deceased , offer reverence and appease the hunger for remembrance. Forefathers in the astral world look forward to Bali being done by their successors.
In Manusmriti it is written:
Yaddadaati vidhivat samyak shraddhaa-samanvitah I
Tattat pitrunaam bhavati paratraanantamyakshayam II
which means – ‘ Whatever one offers ceremoniously and with devotion to the deceased reaches them in heaven in an imperishable and eternal form .”
Of Karkkidaka Vavu :
According to Astrology, Sun is the “Pitru Karaka”. Karkkidaka is the month when Sun is in its own constitution. Both Sun and Moon stay on the same house of the astrological chart on a new moon day indicating the presence of both paternal and maternal lineage. There are references to lord Rama doing Pithrubali on this day during his journey through the forest in Ramayana. This year, this auspcious day falls on Friday 1st Aug 2008.
